Guides to evaluating Children's & Young Adult Literature

The following are resources that can be used by educators and caregivers to evaluate children's and young adult literature. In addition to the detailed information in these guides, it's also recommended to consider the following when selecting books for young people:

  • How will the book be used? Examples include: read by the entire class, incorporated into the curriculum, classroom library, leisure reading, bibliotherapeutic purposed, etc.
  • Is the format accessible to the student/s? 
  • Is the reading level appropriate for the student/s and for a specific purpose? Examples include: pushing the student/s to increase their literacy skills, reading for fun, reading for comprehension of a topic, etc.
  • Is the content of the book appealing to the age and interest of the student/s?
  • Is the content of the book accurate and authentic? Does it have problematic stereotypes?
