MLA Style Overview and Examples

Each source that was quoted or paraphrased in your paper must appear in your List of Works Cited. Whenever you quote or paraphrase, you must identify the author (either in your sentence or in your parenthetical citation) and the page number (in your parenthetical citation).

Algorithms of Oppression enumerates ways that discrimination is "embedded in computer code and, increasingly, in artificial intelligence technologies that we are reliant on, by choice or not" (Noble 1).

or if you use the author's name in the sentence, you may leave it out of the parenthetical citation:

Safiya Umoja Noble presents examples of search results that reinforce negative stereotypes of Black girls and women, identifying ways that discrimination is "embedded in computer code and, increasingly, in artificial intelligence technologies that we are reliant on, by choice or not" (1).

MLA Works Cited 9th Edition

The 9th edition establishes that everything you could want to cite (a journal article, a chapter in a book, a tweet, a YouTube video) has the same basic core elements. If a source is missing an element (like author, other contributors, version, number, etc), you simply skip it and move on to the next one. Be aware of punctuation and remember that most of the time the "Title of Source" will appear in quotation marks while the Title of Container will appear in italics.
