Mendeley

How to create and use a Mendeley account at UNLV.

Welcome to the UNLV Mendeley Reference Manager Guide

Mendeley is a citation management software tool that helps you organize the information that you use in your own writing, generate draft citations and references lists or bibliographies. In this webguide you will find links to Elsevier's Mendeley support webpages and tips on how you might use Mendeley to improve your

  • literature searching,
  • evaluation,
  • article annotation,
  • writing, and
  • citation practices.

You can also learn about the collaboration features that Mendeley offers.

This page of the guide focuses on getting started with a new Mendeley account. Other pages of this guide focus on all the functions and features of Mendeley, and ways to get help using Mendeley.

Change in storage provided to UNLV Mendeley users!  Key date October 31, 2024

UNLV Libraries will no longer pay for extra storage for Mendeley users after October 31, 2024. This will not delete your items or your account, but you will need to consider paying for additional storage if you:
  • use more than 2Gb of data storage in your personal library or
  • use more than a total of 100Mb of data storage in all of the private groups that you created (or "own").
You can check your storage usage in each of your Mendeley accounts by viewing the subscription settings on each account. Mendeley will very likely send you messages as well, offering these upgrades if you are using more storage than the free account provides.

For returning Mendeley users, see what's new.

In September 2020, Elsevier began the migration from the older (legacy) Mendeley Desktop and Cite-o-Matic system to the new Mendeley Reference Manager and Mendeley Cite system.  This guide focuses on the newer system, and a Migration tab is available for those who are interested in switching from Desktop to Reference Manager.  In summer of 2022, Mendeley Desktop software users are seeing a message upon login. "Mendeley Desktop will no longer be available for download from 1st September 2022.  As you have Mendeley Desktop installed you will still be able to sign in and use it as normal after this date.  For more information see https://blog.mendeley.com"

In November 2023, Elsevier announced via emails to Mendeley users that the Careers feature in Mendeley will be discontinued and all user data will be accessible until the end of June 2024.  "After 30 June 2024, all personal data will be removed from our system in full compliance with GDPR guidelines." GDPR = General Data Protection Regulations.  The closure of Mendeley Careers feature should not affect reference management (aka citation) data or attachments in any way.
