A guide for getting started with planning and designing infographics

Planning an Infographic (Worksheet)

Know The 5 W’s:

What? - Identify what you are trying to accomplish.

Who? - Determine your target audience

Why? - Why should it matter to your target audience?

Where? - Know where the audience could find the infographic

When? - Establish when the infographic will be released and the timeline for its completion

Before designing your infographic, consider the following:

Concise, relevant content:

  • Include only the key points that support the main topic or goal of the infographic, and cut out any repetitive or unrelated details.
  • Short sentence with keywords and bullet points is ideal way to present information

Effective use of visuals:

  • Select charts, icons, or illustrations that directly reinforce the information presented.
  • Avoid using visuals that are not related to the topic which causes unnecessary visual clutter.

Readable layout and flow

  •  Organize the layout so the viewer's eye will naturally follow the information in a logical sequence (e.g. top to bottom, or left to right)
  • Proper use of headings and structured numbering will help audience differentiate between sections

Wireframing

It's is essential to develop a wireframe to map out its visual flow and overall design. This step clarifies what information/data needs to be researched beforehand and how it will be presented.

Wireframe – A skeleton outline that defines key elements such as content placement, hierarchy, and layout without focusing on design details.

Wireframing helps you plan the layout of your infographic in advance, streamlining the design process and enhances creativity.
