Nevada History Day Research: K12 Teachers / Librarians

Plan ahead to ensure your research visit to the UNLV Libraries is successful. This guide introduces how to use the UNLV Libraries and what resources are available to support historical research

CCSD Teachers are eligible for borrowing privileges at the UNLV Libraries.

You must show a government issued photo ID, a current valid credit card, and provide proof of employment.

Planning Ahead for a Group Visit to the UNLV Libraries

Group visits to the UNLV Libraries to conduct research must be planned in advance to ensure that:

  1. Special Collections staff will be available to help students with primary source materials.
  2. Arrangements can be made to provide students computer access to conduct research.  Without advance notice students will be limited to the 4 guest computers.
  3. Special Collections staff are willing to schedule group visits on Saturdays when that unit is normally closed if the teacher makes arrangements in advance.

Arrange for your school librarian to give your students an introduction to basic research skills. Many students find the UNLV Libraries overwhelming so it is best to prepare students prior to visiting.

Students should come to UNLV knowing essential information about their topic:

  • The topic's date range or dates of specific events
  • Key people and organizations related to their topic
  • The geographic locale of the topic

Have students search the UNLV Libraries QuickSearch for books before visiting the UNLV Libraries.  Students should bring with them a list of titles with library location and call numbers using this worksheet (optional).
