Pre-Production Steps - Video Tutorial

Does my podcast need a script?

The answer to this question will depend on the goals of your podcast and your intended audience. Typically, all podcasts will benefit from some sort of planning document. This can be as simple as a notecard with a list of topics you plan to discuss or as thorough as a three-page outline. This extra step can help ensure that you hit all of your topics while maintaining an authentic tone.

Below are some helpful questions you should consider during the early stages of your podcast.

What is the purpose of my podcast?

  • Is this for an assignment?
  • Is this a fun side project with my friends?
  • What message am I conveying?

Who is my audience?

  • How can I best present my message to this audience?
  • If this will be an ongoing podcast, how can I keep people interested?
  • Are there any existing podcasts similar to mine?
    • What can I learn from them?

If you decide to create a script or outline document, here are a few examples you can use.

A common way to approach a podcast is to create an outline which uses time marks. Your time marks can be used as a flexible outline to follow during recording.

Example 1:

Topic Time Mark Notes
Introduction 1:00 Welcome to today's episode.
Guests 2:30 Joining us today are...

If you are not too worried about time and plan on doing lots of editing, you can also simply list out the main topics or interview questions you plan to discuss during your recording.

Example 2:

Topic 1: Protein intake

  • What is the ideal protein intake for weight maintenance?
  • What happens to excess protein?
  • How do you calculate your ideal protein intake for muscle growth?

Topic 2: Hypertrophy misconceptions

  • What is the most popular misunderstanding with hypertrophy?
  • How often does the average person need to exercise a muscle group to maximize hypertrophy?

Technology Options

Another step of the pre-production process is figuring out what technology you will utilize for recording and editing your podcast. The following tabs will provide a short pros-cons list for using your phone, laptop, or one of our multimedia production studios at Lied Library.
