Housing and Real Estate Resources: Federal Government and Freely Available Statistics and Reports on Housing and Real Estate

The AHS is sponsored by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The survey is the most comprehensive national housing survey in the United States, breaking down information into housing units.

FHFA gathers and analyzes comprehensive data on the housing markets, providing critical information to guide policy decisions and inform the public.

The FHFA House Price Index (HPI) is a broad measure of the movement of single-family house prices. The HPI is a weighted, repeat-sales index, meaning that it measures average price changes in repeat sales or refinancings on the same properties. This information is obtained by reviewing repeat mortgage transactions on single-family properties whose mortgages have been purchased or securitized by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac since January 1975. The HPI serves as a timely, accurate indicator of house price trends at various geographic levels.

FRASER is a digital library of U.S. economic, financial, and banking history organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. It focuses on the history of the Federal Reserve System. Includes studies, statistical releases, books, statements and speeches on monetary policy and real estate investment, commercial real estate, mortgages, and construction.

FRED provides real estate data, including non-farm real estate foreclosures in the United States, as well as information on commercial real estate prices, real estate loans from commercial banks, household owner's equity in real estate, delinquency rates, home equity loans, and information on real estate services.

HUD provides interested researchers with access to the original datasets generated by PD&R-sponsored data collection efforts, including the American Housing Survey, median family incomes and income limits, as well as microdata from research initiatives on topics such as housing discrimination, the HUD-insured multifamily housing stock, and the public housing population.

The USHMC website contains all the national, regional, state, metropolitan, and local data and analysis in one location. You may search by geography to obtain all the reports available for a particular area. Alternatively, you may search by the type of report. Each report contains different levels of data and/or analysis.

Fair Market Rents (FMRs) data is used to determine payment standard amounts for the Housing Choice Voucher program, to determine initial renewal rents for some expiring project-based Section 8 contracts, to determine initial rents for housing assistance payment (HAP) contracts in the Moderate Rehabilitation Single Room Occupancy program (Mod Rehab), rent ceilings for rental units in both the HOME Investment Partnerships program and the Emergency Solution Grants program, calculation of maximum award amounts for Continuum of Care recipients and the maximum amount of rent a recipient may pay for property leased with Continuum of Care funds, and calculation of flat rents in Public Housing units. HUD estimates FMRs for Office of Management and Budget (OMB) defined metropolitan areas, some HUD defined subdivisions of OMB metropolitan areas and each non-metropolitan county annually.

This site provides free online access to annual statistics on housing vacancies, including Annual Reports from 1995 (Including Metro Area and State Data). Provides historical tables back as far as 1956, revised housing inventories since the 2000s, and current rental and occupancy graphs.

A typical Census Bureau visualization is a visual presentation of data made with charts, tables, maps, and other graphic elements. Visualizations are often interactive and contain text for labeling, but do not have the narrative text of infographics

The Census Bureau's housing data present a comprehensive picture of housing in America. Covers such topics as housing affordability, housing patterns, housing vacancies, new housing construction, geographical mobility, rental housing and residential financing. The web site also includes the following surveys: American Community Survey (ACS), American Housing Survey (AHS), and the Building Permits Survey.

Data files, for public use, with all personally identifiable information removed to ensure confidentiality. Users analyze, extract, customize and publish stats.

Stats displayed in columns and rows with title, ID, notes, sources and release date. Many tables are in downloadable XLS, CVS and PDF file formats.

Provides data on building permits by metropolitan area, county, states, and regions. Historical data is available.

NAR produces housing statistics on the national, regional, and metro-market level where data is available.

The Aggregation Data consists of home purchase and home improvement loans that a depository institution originated or purchased during each calendar year.

The Standard & Poor's (S&P’s) CoreLogic Case–Shiller Home Price Indices represent repeat-sales house price indices for the United States. There indexes include: a national home price index, a 20-city composite index, a 10-city composite index, and 20 individual metro area indices calculated and kept monthly by S&P with data calculated for January 1987 to present.
