Librarians in the Patent & Trademark Resource Center are available to assist the University of Nevada, Las Vegas students, employees, and the public. By receiving this information, the client acknowledges and accepts the scope of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries' Patent & Trademark Resource Center service.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries is designated as a Patent & Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) and is a member of a nationwide network of libraries authorized by 35 U.S.C. 12 to disseminate patent and trademark information and support diverse intellectual property (IP) needs of the public.
Services provided:
- Introduction to patent searching and patent classification, including the Cooperative Patent Classification system.
- Literature from the US Patent & Trademark Office on application procedures and other USPTO business processes.
- Self-help books and other literature on a variety of IP subjects, including patenting, trademark registration, licensing and copyright.
- Orientation to the USPTO website and other IP-related information sources.
- Referrals to appropriate contacts for IP-related transactions, business planning, and entrepreneurship education. Referrals are made primarily to the USPTO, Nevada Small Business Development Center and other state and local government offices.
- Access to patent search databases on the Web.
- Directing users to information and explaining the application process and fee schedule.
- Providing users a directory of local patent attorneys who are licensed to practice before the USPTO.
- Workshops on intellectual property topics.
- Assistance on how to do historical research patents and trademarks.
- Showing how to track current research by company or nonprofit.
- Help finding patent assignee information.
The Patent and Trademark Resource Center does not provide:
- Opinions on the patentability of an inventor’s work, including novelty, utility, and nonobviousness.
- Assistance writing any user's patent or trademark application, either in whole or in part.
- Any other IP or business-related processes normally performed by a licensed attorney.
- Endorsement of any attorney, agent, or other private entity for the purpose of applying for a patent,
- Registering a trademark, manufacturing, market-entry, or any related IP and business matters.
- Startup, payment of application fees or other funding.
