Effective Search Strategies for Library Databases

 

  The following are suggestions to improve your search results

 

Use different search terms or keywords

 

a.       Try using other words to describe your topic, it will give you better results. 

b.       Examples: foodservice, food service, restaurants, food industry, hotels, resorts, casinos

 Truncation (*)

a.       This will locate alternate endings for your search term.

b.       Example - mark* to find market, markets, marketers, and marketing, etc.

c.       Note: Some databases use different symbols; consult the help page for the correct symbol

 Search a variety of databases

a.       Each database contains unique material. Search several databases in order to retrieve an increased number of relevant materials. The databases have been grouped by subject area to quickly identify relevant resources.

Use Subject terms

a.       These are the terms used by the database to index resources relevant to your topic.  

Reference Lists 

a.       Review the reference list of relevant articles for patterns to discover more resources.  Frequently appearing journals, authors and industry terms are additional search strategies to increase research results.

Help page

a.       Each database has a page with tips to help you effectively search that resource.
