Dr. Mitchell S. McKinney

 

Presentation Title: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Social Media Use and Debate Viewing

Presenter: Dr. Mitchell S. McKinney, Professor and Department of Communication Chair, University of Missouri

Lecture Date & Time: Monday, 9/12/16 at 4 p.m.-5 p.m. in Greenpun Hall Auditorium

Abstract: Dr. McKinney will discuss findings from a number of his studies examining citizens’ “social watching” behaviors, where one processes a televised political message while interacting online with others who are part of their social media network. Specifically, his research has focused on citizens’ live-tweeting nationally televised presidential debates, exploring both the effects and content of debate viewers’ Twitter activity. Does social media use while engaging a presidential debate enhance or detract from desired democratic outcomes?

Biographical Information and Selected Scholarship by Dr. Mitchell S. McKinney

As part of the UNLV Presidential Debate Lecture Series Dr. Mitchell S. McKinney, professor and chair of the University of Missouri Communication Department, will discuss the use of social media during presidential debates.

Dr. Mitchell S. McKinney teaches courses in political communication, and rhetorical theory and criticism. His research interests include presidential debates, political campaigns, civic engagement, media and politics, and presidential rhetoric. McKinney is the co-author/editor of seven books. His research has also appeared in major communication, journalism, and interdisciplinary journals, including Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs, Journalism Studies, Communication Studies, American Behavioral Scientist, Argumentation and Advocacy, Journal of Constructivist Psychology.
