COLA 100 "College Success"

Information on the basics of college-level research

About this Guide

The librarians at UNLV want to help you adapt what you already know about research to the more specialized research challenges that you find in college.  This guide features resources that will help you build your skills for research in college.

Of course, an online guide can only do so much.  For assistance that is tailored to your specific research needs, consult with one of us.  Consultations usually last 30 to 60 minutes and can be conducted virtually or in person.  We are also happy to help via email.

Research challenges librarians frequently help students with:

  • Adjusting your research topic:  Is your topic a good match for your interests?  Is it focused enough to complete in a reasonable amount of time?  Is it so specific that you won't find much information on it?  We can help you find a topic that is both practical and enjoyable.
  • Finding information that matches the requirements for your assignment:  We will review your instructor's requirements with you and share strategies for finding and working with the information you need.
  • Citing tricky cases:  Especially on the Web, it can be hard to identify the type of information you are working with and find an example to help you cite it correctly.  We have a lot of experience in this area, and we are happy to help.
