Getting Started on Twitter!

Twitter could be called a "real time social networking" site, a place for sharing information as it happens, and for connecting with others in real time. For CRJ 490, we will be using it to assist you with resources & research strategies for your project this semester. We'll be Tweeting throughout the semester, and of course, we hope you'll join in w/Tweets as well.

Go to Twitter.com and sign up for a free account. Do so by entering your name, email address, and desired password in the provided space.

To create an account:

  1. Go to http://twitter.com and find the sign up box, or go directly to https://twitter.com/signup.
  2. Enter your full name, email address, and a password.
  3. Click Sign up for Twitter.
  4. On the next page, you can select a username (usernames are unique identifiers on Twitter) — type your own or choose one we've suggested. We'll tell you if the username you want is available.
  5. Double-check your name, email address, password, and username.
  6. Click Create my account. You may be asked to complete a Captcha to let us know that you're human.
  7. Twitter will send a confirmation email to the address you entered on sign up, click the link in that email to confirm your email address and account.

How to Post a Tweet

Definition: A Tweet is a 140-character message posted via Twitter.

To post a Tweet via the web:

  1. Sign in to your Twitter account.
  2. Type your Tweet into the box on the left side of your screen, or click the blue compose new Tweet button in the top navigation bar. It looks like this:
  3. Make sure your update is fewer than 140 characters. We'll count the characters for you! Remaining characters show up as a number below the box.
  4. Click the Tweet button to post the Tweet to your profile.
  5. You will immediately see your Tweet in the timeline on your homepage.

To post a Tweet via text message (SMS):

Another way (some say the best way!) to post updates is from your mobile phone. First, connect your phone with your Twitter account, then simply send your Tweet as a text message to your appropriate Twitter short code the same way you'd send any other text message. Remember to count your characters!

Let's say you want to post a question to @CRJ490libinfo. Here are a couple examples:

@CRJ490libinfo Any suggestions where we could find info about what other tourist cities like Orlando are doing to prevent street robberies?

@CRJ490libinfo Where can I find auto theft statistics for the following cities: Orlando, Los Angeles, and Honolulu?

What Are Hashtags ("#" Symbols)?

Definition: The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.

Using Hashtags to Categorize Tweets by Keyword:

  • People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.
  • Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.

How to Send a Private ("Direct") Message to @CRJ490LibInfo or others on Twitter:

Direct Message

Also called a DM and most recently called simply a "message," these Tweets are private between the sender and recipient. Tweets sent over SMS become DMs when they begin with "d username" to specify who the message is for. Learn more about direct messages.
