What We're Doing: The Library is repairing and resurfacing a significant portion of the walkways and adjacent areas on the first floor using terrazzo, a product developed for high-traffic areas. This project includes areas near entrances and the Circulation Desk.
Why We're Doing It: The first floor of Lied Library presents many safety challenges with the various types of flooring materials used and awkward transitions from cement flooring to carpeted areas. In order to eliminate the tripping hazards and provide a safer and more aesthetically-pleasing environment, the current floor needs to be removed, repaired in places, and replaced. "Before" photos are below, showing the floor in its current state (photos from July 2013).
How You'll Benefit: The new floor will be flat with smooth transitions to carpet, making it easier to move about the building without worrying about tripping. Also, due to the nature of terrazzo, the floor with be much easier to clean and will stay cleaner longer (a benefit for our maintenance crews, too!).
Planning: Fall 2013.
Construction/Installation: Winter Break 2013-14.
Completed: Early Spring 2014.
